When I give you Partial Highlights, I want them staying natural and perfectly blended, not fading out two days later. The biggest rule is simple: wait at least 48 hours before you shampoo or fully wet your hair. That breathing room helps the color settle so you keep that smooth, shiny look clients rave about after highlights in Laguna Hills. And yes, our Mediterranean sun and pool season can speed up brassiness, so the first 48 hours matter more than most people think.
Your Partial Highlights: the 0 to 48-hour checklist (no guessing)
Right after Partial Highlights, I generally recommend you keep things calm. The color is still oxidizing and settling into the hair, and the cuticle can be a little more open than usual. That is why the first 48 hours are about protecting your result, not testing it.
Do this first: Keep your hair dry for 48 hours. Skip shampoo, skip soaking it in the shower, and avoid sweaty workouts that leave your roots damp.
Showering without ruining the blend
If you need to shower, clip your hair up and keep steam exposure short. If your hairline gets a little misted, do not panic. Just gently blot it dry. Don't rub with a towel like you're trying to start a fire. Friction is what makes fresh color look less polished.
Swimming, hot tubs, and beach days around Laguna Hills
Try to avoid pools, ocean swims, and hot tubs for 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine and salt are rough on highlighted hair, especially when it's fresh. If you absolutely have to get in the water, I recommend wetting your hair with fresh water first and smoothing in a leave-in conditioner as a barrier, then putting it up or using a swim cap. This is the same advice I give a lot of my Lake Forest Drive area clients who squeeze in pool time or a quick beach walk near the Laguna Hills Civic Center.
The first week: how to keep highlights shiny and avoid that dry feel
A good partial blonding highlight or balayage focuses on adding brightness to the crown and sides while blending with your natural color. That blend is what makes the look feel expensive and easy. The first week is where I see most people accidentally mess it up with too much heat, too much sun, or the wrong cleanser.
Heat styling: If you can, skip heavy flat ironing and high-heat blowouts the first week. When you do style, use a heat protectant and keep your tools on the lower side. High heat lifts the cuticle and that is where fading starts.
Sweat and gym days: Post-work workouts are a big one in our area. Try not to leave salty sweat sitting at the scalp. If you cannot wash yet, blow-dry the root area on cool and brush gently to keep the hairline from drying out.
Sun exposure: Laguna Hills sun is no joke. Sunlight can warm up blondes fast, which often reads as brassiness. A UV-protectant leave-in spray makes a real difference if you are outside a lot.
If you booked highlights because you want that “exactly what I wanted” look, protect it like you would protect a fresh manicure. A little restraint for seven days keeps your color smoother for weeks.
What to wash with (and what usually causes brassiness fast)
Your first wash sets the tone. Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water can fade toners faster and make the hair feel rough.
My simple product “types” list
- Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo: This is your baseline. It cleans without stripping.
- Moisturizing conditioner: Focus it mid-length to ends, especially where highlights sit.
- Leave-in with UV protection: Great for clients in Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, and Foothill Ranch who are outside a lot or commuting in strong sun.
- Purple or blue shampoo: Use only as I recommend. Overdoing it can make hair look dull or grab unevenly on porous ends.
Quick tip: If you love the way your hair felt right after color, keep a weekly deep-conditioning mask in rotation. It helps maintain that soft, healthy finish clients notice after their cut and color.
Toner and trim checks at 4 to 8 weeks (the easy way to stay blended)
Partial Highlights are meant to be wearable. They brighten the crown and sides, blend into your natural base, and grow out softer than all-over lightening. But “low maintenance” does not mean “no maintenance.”
In our salon, I usually suggest a toner or gloss check and a quick trim check around 4 to 8 weeks, depending on how fast your hair warms up in the sun and how often you wash. If your blonde starts looking a little too golden, a toner refresh brings it right back without redoing the whole highlight.
If you're planning wedding events and you're searching for a bridal stylist, I like to time your highlight refresh so your tone looks clean in photos and your ends look polished, not thirsty.
If you're still deciding on the look, these two posts help you plan without over-lightening: what to expect for first-time Partial Highlights and how Partial Highlights stay low-maintenance.
When to text me, and when it's totally normal
A little dryness or tightness the first few days can happen after lightening. Most of the time, it settles quickly once you are back to gentle washing and conditioning. What I do not want is you feeling like you have to “wait it out” if something looks off.
Reach out soon if you notice uneven warmth that was not there at the appointment, a toner that seems to drop quickly, or ends that suddenly feel rough even with conditioner.
Usually normal is a little scalp sensitivity, or your hair feeling different the first time you style at home. I can talk you through product amounts and heat settings so you get the same smooth finish.
“I’ve been going to Farah for my highlights for the past five years, and I really love her work. She always does my hair exactly how I want, and I’ve never had brassy color or dry hair.”
one of our regulars
If you found me by searching “hair salon near me” or “hairdressing salon” and you're not sure you're in the right spot, this is how I work. I listen closely, I stay detail-focused, and I want your color to look good outside of the salon too. If you're due for a refresh, a Partial Highlights appointment usually runs $175 to $250. Need a quick check-in? Call or email and tell me what you're seeing in natural light. I'll guide you on the next best step, including if a toner refresh makes sense.
